Pinch Post Moves: Shot Fake Crossover Drive
By Hal Wissel
Pinch Post Crossover Drive
This drill gives you practice making a crossover drive from the pinch post. Start at the block on the lane and toss the ball to the pinch post (elbow). Imagine that you are closely guarded and catch the ball with your back to the basket, while making a one-two stop landing on your inside (closest to middle) foot first. Make a front turn to the middle to see the rim and your defender. Be a triple threat and a threat to shoot first. Make an aggressive drive (jab) step and shot fake, keeping your weight on your pivot foot. Imagine your defender has his hand up playing you for a shot, make a crossover step with your drive-step foot past the defender’s lead foot. Push the dribble out with your outside hand, the one away from the defender, and then push off your pivot foot, keeping your head up with your eyes on the basket. The ball must leave your hand before you lift your pivot foot off the floor or you will commit a traveling violation. Having your weight on your pivot foot during your drive step helps prevent traveling. Protect the ball with your inside hand and your body. Drive in a straight line to the basket, close to an imaginary defender cutting off the defender’s retreat by closing the gap between your body and the defender’s retreat step. Look to the basket and be alert for defensive help. Finish your drive by going strong to the basket for a layup, exploding on your takeoff and protecting the ball with two hands. After shooting the layup be ready to rebound.
